Fair Trade Coffee

Order fair trade organic coffee at TUUC - Save money - Benefit TUUC

The TUUC Board has approved a trial fundraiser to sell bulk fair trade organic coffee to TUUC members and friends. The coffee will be purchased from the same company now used for the TUUC Sunday coffee hour. There are three coffee choices- Full City (a medium roast), French roast (robust smoky flavor) and Decaf. The coffee is available as whole beans or ground in bulk five-pound bags for $45.00 ($9.00/pound).

Coffee orders likely will be placed monthly. Payment by check is required at the time of submitting an order. Make check payable to TUUC and note "coffee purchase" in memo line. Submit order form (available at church, or click here to print your own) and payment in sealed envelope or stapled together, and place in the mailbox slot labeled "COFFEE ORDERS" in TUUC copy room or send by mail to:

Abolish the Death Penalty

Buddhist Chaplain Don Tarbutton on January 25, 2009, presented a Sunday Service sharing his Buddhist perspective calling for abolition of the death penalty. That service, with opening readings and remarks by our celebrant, Dick Coulter (a good friend of Don Tarbutton), is available here as MP3 audio file: (click here for audio file)  Don is an active member of the UU church in Portland.

Conscientious Objection

TUUC has long been a supportive site for individuals reviewing a personal call to conscience. For years there has been a monthly opportunity for people to receive information from an experienced conscientious objector counselor, TUUC member Howard Welsh. We recently received this note from Howard:

“I will resume the CO workshops in Tacoma next year when I am done with school. There continues to be steady involvement of youths ages 14- 30 and I am able to do a lot of counseling by phone and email, of course. Feel free to make referrals from anyone in Tacoma who may inquire. I am doing the CO workshops at Seattle U. this year since I am working at the Clinical Performance Lab here and taking Nurse Practitioner Classes full-time. In Peace, Howard Welsh”

Howard meets with individuals interested in conscientious objection on Wednesday evenings, 6:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria Meeting Room at Providence Medical Center in Seattle. On Thursdays starting by 5:30 p.m., he is available for CO counsel at the Seattle University Student Center, Reidy Collegium on the third floor.

Restorative Therapy & Faith-Based Anti-GLBT
Bullying at Religious Educational Institutions Uncovered

Marc Adams, Lambda Literary Award finalist and Silver Pen Award recipient for his autobiography, The Preacher's Son spoke at the Sunday morning service here at TUUC Sunday, August 9th. His message is tittled, "From Fundamentalism to Freedom." You may check-out an audio CD of that service from our TUUC library.

The Preacher's Son chronicles Marc's life growing up gay as a son of a fundamentalist Baptist minister in rural Pennsylvania where he endured a childhood of physical, emotional and spiritual abuse. He went on to attend, by choice, Jerry Falwell's Liberty University where he also was employed for 3 1/2 years in the student recruiting/university relations department. His book articulately reveals life at Liberty and the struggle to conform to the standards for which he would have been a martyr. He shares about his years as an ex-gay. It culminates with his coming to terms with being gay and his coming out to his fundamentalist Baptist Christian family and his journey to become a UU.
